Today is Earth Day, which is all about celebrating planet Earth, and addressing the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability.

Here at Everyturn, we’ve launched our new sustainability programme!  This programme will help us review our environmental impact and focus on ways to reduce our carbon footprint and become more sustainable. It’s so important for us to take action, as the climate crisis affects everyone, including the people we support.

“We’re here to care for and support people’s mental health and wellbeing, but for us it goes beyond that. If our purpose is to make sure no one struggles alone, we also need to care for our wider planetary wellbeing. The climate crisis isn’t something that’s coming, or just ‘around the corner’ – we’re in it now.” – Alex Slack, our Head of Estates & Sustainability

Our sustainability programme has three main goals, these are to:

  • Reach net zero by 2030.
  • Reduce our impact on the planet.
  • Improve health conditions for the people we support and our colleagues – now and in the future.

Throughout the month of April, we’ve been sharing statistics and information on our carbon footprint across the organisation, and ways we’ll be adapting our practices to change this. We’ve also been focusing on changes we can make to reduce our carbon footprint on an individual level, to ensure our colleagues feel informed.

We surveyed our colleagues in 2023, to see how they felt about sustainability:

  • 85% are worried about the climate crisis.
  • 92% feel it’s our responsibility to reduce Everyturn’s environmental impact.
  • 96% have already made lifestyle changes to tackle climate change.

Some of our next steps alongside working on reducing our carbon footprint are:

  • To design and deliver Carbon Literacy training for all our colleagues.
  • Launch our Sustainability Champions group, to help us create engaging ‘challenges’ across the organisation, to help our colleagues and services to make sustainable changes.
  • Review all our properties for energy efficiency.
  • Work with community groups to develop projects to use Everyturn’s green spaces better, to increase biodiversity and wellbeing.
  • Ensure all our key suppliers have net zero targets.
  • Launch a new sustainability committee and delivery group to help us achieve all these things!
