What is self-care?

Self-care involves taking actions to look after your physical or mental health.

It becomes particularly important to maintain good self-care around busy times like the festive period, when our lives can sometimes become hectic or feel unmanageable.

It can be easy to dismiss self-care as self-indulgence, however self-care is about placing your needs where they should be – which might not necessarily be first, but shouldn’t always be last.

Here are a few tips for maintaining good self-care over the festive season:

  • Ask for help – if you’re struggling to manage, don’t be afraid to ask willing friends, family or neighbours to lend a hand
  • Volunteer! Helping others during what can be a difficult time of year can be very rewarding and can bring a sense of enjoyment far greater than material gifts
  • Remember that it’s okay not to feel fantastic – there can be a lot of pressure to look or act a certain way over the festive period. Keep in mind that it’s okay to feel how you feel, and try to focus on the positives aspects of your experience, not the negatives.
