In a recent report by the Lancet, the physical health side effects of antidepressants have been ranked for the first time, showing a number of differences between possible side effects of different medications, including changes to weight, heart rate, and blood pressure.
The report emphasises that it isn’t intended to scare people who are taking or considering antidepressants. Instead, the researchers hope it will encourage open conversations and informed decisions about which medication is right for each person.
Antidepressants and other medications can offer vital support when someone is struggling; they can ease symptoms and give people the strength to take the next step. Whether to take medication is a personal choice to be considered with support and advice from a health professional.
Everyturn Mental Health Chief Executive, Adam Crampsie commented:
“People should always get medical advice before making any changes to their medication. This study is a helpful prompt for open and informed conversations with a GP or mental health professional about what feels right for each person.
“At Everyturn, we understand that recovery looks different for everyone, and we’re committed to providing a full range of support, from talking therapies to community-based help, so people can find what works best for their wellbeing.
“This research is an important reminder that medication can play a valuable role in supporting people’s mental health, but it’s only one part of their recovery. The best outcomes happen when medication is combined with talking therapies, social support and self-care.”
