Crisis houses

Our crisis houses act as an alternative to hospital, with just enough clinical intervention to support the person, but in a comfortable and homely environment.

We deliver our crisis houses in partnership with the Crisis Team, who manage access to our beds. This means that you can’t refer yourself to this service.

The support we offer

Our crisis house offers a small number of beds available to people living in Gateshead and Newcastle who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Our crisis house offers a short-term, clinically-led alternative to hospital, offering immediate support in a residential setting.

Our specialist team of mental health nurses and support staff work closely with the crisis team during your time at the crisis house, jointly delivering your home-based treatment support plan.

How does the process work?

If a bed is available, the NHS crisis team will assess the person’s needs to understand if our crisis houses are the right support for them.

Our friendly colleagues will work with the crisis team to agree our shared treatment plan, based on the person’s needs. This will include medical reviews and joint home-based treatment appointments at the crisis house.

Once they’re in our care, we work with the person to develop a care plan and a risk management strategy. We provide one-on-one support and work with the person to develop coping strategies and help them manage their risk of mental health crisis. We’re also able to support with:

Medication management
Alcohol management and community detox if needed
Physical health management
Practical support with housing, benefits and connections to community resources
Support for families and carers
Communication with other services, such as the Crisis Team, Community Treatment Team (CTT), their GP, and their social worker.
